TOOTHACHE
Rinse your mouth with water, then gently floss to remove
any debris that may cause alignment problems (this
alone can often cause toothache). Take painkillers. You
may want to apply a cold compress to the outside of
your mouth. See a dentist if pain persists.
WISDOM TOOTH PAIN
Rinse your mouth with salty water every 2 to 3 hours.
Take over-the-counter painkillers. Apply a cold compress for 20 minutes wherever required.
GUM ABSCESSES AND SWELLING
You must see your dentist ASAP so they can prescribe
the appropriate medication. You may need antibiotics,
pain relief medication or both. While you wait to see
your dentist, rinse your mouth with warm, salty water and
take over-the-counter pain medication.
DENTAL TRAUMA
Dental trauma is where your teeth have received a
sudden impact—either through a sporting accident or by
a crash or fall. If your tooth has fallen out of the socket,
carefully rinse with salt water, then place it back in the
socket. If not possible, try to keep the tooth between
your teeth and gums and get to the dentist ASAP. Alternatively, place a tooth in a small jar of milk. Call the dentist clinic ASAP so they can talk you through the most appropriate action to save your tooth.
BROKEN OR CHIPPED TOOTH
Make an appointment with the dentist ASAP. Broken or
damaged teeth are susceptible to infection, so you must
seek help immediately. Rinse your mouth with cold water.
Take over-the-counter medication to reduce pain and
inflammation. If required, apply a cold compress to the
outside of the cheek or face.
BLEEDING GUMS
Continue to brush your teeth and gums unless the gums
are very painful. However, brush gently in a circular
motion. Floss your teeth to remove debris, and rinse your
mouth regularly with water.
DISLODGED FILLING OR CROWN
If you’ve lost a filling or crown, your tooth may be quite
sensitive. Apply a small amount of clove oil to the area
to numb the pain. Book an appointment with a dentist
ASAP.
