PROTECT YOUR TEETH AND JAW WITH A CUSTOM MOUTHGUARD.
The Australian Dental Association strongly recommends that individuals who play high-impact or non-contact sports with a collision risk should invest in a custom-made sports mouthguard. Only custom mouthguards can protect your teeth and jaw from preventable bills and pain.
This dental information has been medically reviewed by Australian Dental surgeon Dr Aran Moorthy, BDS. Dr Moorthy obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Adelaide. Read more about our dentist Dr Moorthy here.
Custom-made mouthguards are small appliances created to fit in your mouth to protect your teeth and jaw against accidents and injuries during sports. While plenty of ‘boil-and-bite’ mouthguards are available at pharmacies or online, they don’t offer sufficient protection.
Dental injury is expensive and can result in valuable tooth loss. Don’t put your dental health at risk. Invest in a custom-made sports mouthguard. Health insurance rebates are available.
As your mouthguard will be customised, you must see our dentist or hygienist first. They will assess your teeth and jaw, discuss your sporting activities and recommend the best mouthguard for you.
We’ll take an impression of your teeth and create a plaster mould required to make your mouthguard. Your mouthguard will later be created to a particular thickness to suit your needs.
You can pick up your mouthguard at the clinic a few days later.
Custom mouthguards are typically made of thermoplastic materials, which are flexible, durable and safe for oral use. The specific materials used depend on the type of the mouthguard and its intended purpose. Also, some mouthguards are thicker than others for the same reason. Common materials include ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) or dual laminate materials that combine soft and hard layers. The soft layer is comfortable, and the hard exterior gives you the durability and protection you need.
First, you’ll need to visit the clinic so the dentist or dental prosthetist can take an impression of your teeth. This ensures a precise fit for comfort and maximum protection. Once the impression is made, you’ll need to wait a few days for your mouthguard to be created and then return to the clinic. Here, we’ll check that the mouthguard fits you perfectly. If no adjustments need to be made, you’re good to go!
Custom mouthguards are far superior to ‘boil and bite’ mouthguards, offering the following benefits:
• accurate, superior custom fit for unmatched protection
• the only mouthguards capable of preventing dental trauma
• easy talking and breathing
• tasteless and odourless
• can be customised to suit the individual’s needs.
Additionally, custom sports mouthguards are also the only ones recommended by sports medicine Australia, the ADA and can attract private health insurance rebates.
• Broken jaw
• Chipped teeth
• Knocked out teeth
• Damaged tooth roots
• Cut gums
• Concussion
• Split lips
• Cut cheeks and cuts to the face
High-impact sports like football and rugby aren’t the only sports that require a mouthguard. Typical lower-impact sports where custom mouthguards are recommended include skateboarding, netball, soccer, touch football, basketball and cricket.
The verdict is still not clear whether a mouthguard can definitively prevent concussion. However, theoretically, a custom sports mouthguard decreases any hard impact from the jaw from radiating to the skull, which lessens the blow. This is because when a mouthguard is worn correctly, it pulls the mandible (jawbone) forward and creates a space between the jaw bone and the skull.
